  • Repair propagator Cover

Bad news - cracked a 52cm propagator cover. Split up the long side wall.

    Was thinking.

    1. Drill a hole at end of crack to stop it spreading

    2. Get 2 strips of 2" wide clear plastic or the like to create the patch and to stabilize movement

    3. Fill crack with clear silicon

    4. Small bead of silicon 10mm from edge of each patch.

    5. Sandwich crack with patches - 1 either side of cover

    6. remove excess.

Is the job a good one

I've go the stuff, so cost is not using silicon for something else

    Advice welcome.

Next option is a click and collect from wilco. 60 mile round trip.

Silicon is probably not going to be strong enough, unless there is very little stress on the repair.

Bit of similar plastic about 2" wide and as long as the crack, glued on with two-part epoxy would be my first try. Always tricky as different types of plastic react differently - if you need to shape the donor piece to get it to fit before gluing, you can sometimes get plastic to bend OK if heated cautiously with a hot air gun or hair dryer .

Current one patched up will do the job until I need a "big shop".

I had thought of just pop riveting metal strips inside and out along the rim and sealing the crack, but thought the 4 holes might weaken it more. Perhaps not such a silly ideal if reasonable distance between the 4 holes.

can you prise the crack open? (ie does one end reach to the edge?)
If so, I'd be tempted to use araldite. Clean it up, then get araldite in the crack, let it close back up and wipe off the excess.

Might the solvent glue used on plastic waste pipes work?

If it was me, I'd stick some tape over it and ignore the crack. If there's no gap, does it matter?

I've even got polytunnel repair tape.

Exactly!! Why go to the risk of breaking the lid by drilling holes in it when you could stick over the crack.

If the ends of the crack aren't drilled the crack may run. Needs to be done carefully with some wood immediately behind it. Possibly a very hot nail might do it.

If I tried drilling into a plastic lid it would definitely crack - that's why i said what I would do.

Me too, mine has been cracked for years along with the veg box in my fridge and I've used tape on it
