Have had two pairs number 5, for OH and me, since 1995 and have dealt with like Aberdeenplotter.

Plastic going a little because they are kept in back pocket. Don't think insulating tape will do it, you'll just end up with a sticky mess.
It'll cost £25+postage to have them reconditioned.
