Strata storage trunks as veg planters?

I have quite a number of these:

I can't remember how to add a picture, I'll need to go refresh my memory but for now I've put a link for you to see what I mean.

Is there any reason I could drill a few holes in the bottom of them and use then to grow veg in?

Only reason I can imagine you might not want to use them is that maybe being black the soil and roots might get a bit hot. On the other hand, in Perthshire, that might not be an issue and in fact could even be an advantage. Otherwise, it's a giant planter on wheels, and a good price too for that purpose.

Ok, I got impatient and here's an update in case anyone else was wondering.

I called Strata Head Office to ask if there was any chemicals or nasties in the plastic that would mean it was inadvisable to grow in them and was told nope, it will be ok.

So, I'm going to plant potatoes in them. Lots of them. Then, once the haulms die back, I can just put the lid back on and put the whole trunk in a cold area and hopefully the potatoes will store ok for some time. At least that's what a man on YouTube reckons.

Oh I forgot to update my profile, I'm in the Highlands now, just further north of Inverness.

I only paid a tenner for mine and I've had so much use out of them, they've been great.

GG I grow my potatoes in curbside recycling boxes 3 to a box and they always do well, have to keep up the watering though.

the only things I'd be slightly wary off are that soil is heavier than the loads they are intended for, and UV stabilisation, so I'd be a bit careful when moving it if fully loaded.
