  • Sunken seed beds with mini greenhouse / cloche success

    Another year, another "alternative" idea...

This year I have mostly been.... experimenting with "Soil bank bordered, sunken mulched seedbeds covered with cloches" due to the ~UNRELENTING SUN~ drying to a ~crisp~ my plot soil....

In the above picture are raddishes "scarlet globe" half a packet planted 5 weeks ago and now ready to harvest. Also notice the opened sided cloche thingy with netting wrapped fully over the cloche.

+ Using rake make plateau (flat top) shaped mound of tilthed soil 22" x 52"

+ Using rake excavate a sunken central section, drawing soil to create bank borders, a bit like an armchair, back to the sun.

+ Using plastic grid & dipper, dip 60 holes, pinch raddish seed into each hole. Do not rake soil into these holes.

+ Riddle dried commercial stable manure layer over this sunken seed bed until holes filled and soil level.

+ Water, almost a full watering can.

+ Cover with clever mini greenhouse cloche to deter the birds, too hot for snails and slugs

+ Water a couple of times a week

Thinned out the big ones, lets the smaller ones grow on.
