Squash station horse box for 2020 build

Idea was to come up with a less plastic "Squash station" for the upcoming growing season. Fully up-cycled version, not so tall as the Rotol deleks.



its 30" x 30" inch square at base, 22" x 28" opening at the top

Will staple discarded manure bags, black side outwards onto the outside of the box





Filll with horse bedding manure in Feb, give a couple of months to break down before planting trailers & climbers in m.May

Q: Reminds me of some architecture but cant think where ?

Could be used as a hotbed in the colder months, then a squash bed. Nice.
Are you still making the woodchip socks?

I plant in the ground because I don’t like using any plastics,slugs love wet plastic,you could’ve made a nice little raised bed?

I "made" something similar out of the wooden crates that paving slabs and slates are delivered in. I couldn't have got a horse in them though unless it was My Little Pony.

Every time i put her in (MLP) she keeps escaping through the gaps.

So here is the same box with old manure bag stapled to it.





Notice it channels the rain into the corners as intended...

* in the mk1.2 version have the gullies slightly lower down the box.

Two horizontal slats at the top and perhaps a bit of batten shaping the box at the bottom with the slanting slats more towards the bottom of the box.

Its a bespoke container to hold a loosely filled wheel barrows worth of straw filled horse manure. As im unable to find a commercially available box of these dimensions, i have to make it.

Also its a temporary structure only in use from m.May till l.September. Overwinter its stored under cover.

I need it to be light-ish (hence the big gaps) but rigid to contain the settling manure.

After ive grown my squashes x2 and o/d cuccumbers x2 (trailers & climbers super combo). at the end of the season I pull it off and process the settled nicely rotted manure with a riddle. Then use it on my seed beds as a light friable cap layer the following season.

I like this, will ask Mr M to build me one. He made a 4ft x 20" one in the greenhouse to help with passive heating ( but I have horrible feeling the manure may not be fresh enough)
