Planter - how big are yours?

Evening all,

I hope you're enjoying some quality time in your garden!

I'm going to knock up some planters to go by the back door to have some radishes, lettuce, etc closer to hand.

First question - how big do i make them? I'm thinking a metre or so long by 30cm or so wide in order to keep them portable. Should i go bigger? How deep does the compost need to be?

Second question - what else is worth having by the back door apart from lettuce and radishes? I've got spuds in bags.

I've planted more than usual so far this season and now want to maximise the opportunities to grow at home!

My homemade one is about 1m x 50cm. We have some we bought this year for DD that are about 50cm x 30cm.

Spring onions, chives (these can take over but easy to replant elsewhere), salad leaves, baby carrots. I grow most of my herbs near kitchen but not in same planter as “salad type”.

You could grow spring onions, rocket, herbs as in parsley, thyme, sage etc. Peas for pea shoots, chives and any of the salad bowl mixes. You can harvest a few leaves from this mix and they will continue to produce more.
The planter doesn't need to be very deep for any of these.

Thanks both. Peas are a great idea. I was wondering where i was going to plant them all!

Sorry - i should have said that we have a belfast sink by the back door step for the herbs... i forgot to mention that as i'm in charge of veg, fruit and cutting the grass and hedges, trees, doing fencing, etc and my wife is in charge of flowers and the herbs!

Strawberries. Anything that needs regular picking, dwarf peas and beans or climbers if you can add supports, courgettes, cucumbers, salad leaves.

Thanks all. I will add courgettes to the list too VC! (We've got strawberries in pots) Do cucumbers grow well outside?

Peas
Lettuce
Rocket
Spring onions
mini carrots - any particular variety????
and Herbs, lots of Herbs.

Any further ideas on the size?
