    Hi

i have a rotary clothes line in the middle of my lawn, so in the winter months I create a muddy path through the grass when I hang out my washing.

I've had a look on-line for meshes etc that I could lay out as a path to protect it a bit, but all I've found is either way too big (I need a "path" no wider than 0.5m wide (to fit between fixed garden features etc) and 5m long) but the smallest lightweight stuff seems to come in 1m x 10m lengths, or too robust (the only way a car could ever be driven over this is if a helicopter dropped one on the lawn).

What do other people do? I don't really want stepping stones - something relatively portable I could take up in the summer and hide behind the shed would be ideal.

Hi, have you looked at roll-up or roll-out garden paths? There seem to be quite a few options online.

I guess the only problems might be if you leave deep imprints or end up with yellowing grass in your lawn, but they might sort themselves out a few weeks after you've lifted the path.

I was thinking you could roll it out on the days you need to access the line , then take it up so as to have even less impact on the lawn?

Many thanks - it's embarrassingly easy to not find things sometimes...

It arrived today and is now on the lawn. Something to note - it is only very slightly flexible side-to-side, so you either need to assemble it in short-ish sections and lay these at slight angles to each other, or have a pretty straight route over which you're laying it. But it looks like it will do the job - I'll know once the lawn has dried out next May.

One other thing - don't be daft like I was and not notice that I was connecting adjacent pieces upside-down and so had to disassemble about 2m worth...

Excellent, CH. Got to be better than traipsing along a muddy path of your own making.

Let us know how you get on CH…are you going to leave it down all the time?

I’m wondering about mowing over it- is it snug to the ground?

                    Hi Nicos -

I haven't decided whether to leave it down all the time yet - my natural sloth indicates that that is what will happen...

It sits on the surface, and it's proud by about 2cm. When I mow next (with a mower this will be towards the end of May (or even at the end of June) after scything off the long winter growth probably at the beginning of the month), I'll roll it up and put it away for the summer.
