Netting frames for Brassicas

I posted these pics in a thread in a different section last year but I reckon that now we have a dedicated DIY section I thought I'd post there here in their proper place. We have big problems with Pigeons on our lotties and anything that isn't protected gets decimated. The nets keep the Cabbage Whites off the crop too so its a double bonus.

The frames are built out of sections. The bottom ones have legs that stick into the ground and the tops are held on by ties.

You've made quite a few sections I see...they look really good.
How deep have you planted the posts?(- I'm just thinking about how easy is it to pull them out and move the cages for the following year)

My soil is very fine so its easy to push the legs into it, or at worse, give them a knock in with a hammer or a brick. Some legs are only about four inches long but I've found that isn't really long enough so the norm is now about six inches. I have a few legs that I need to extend.

Just a suggestion, why don't you buy a cheap air rifle/pistol, and you'll have some meat to go with your veg (its what I would do)

Mine are a bit bigger (8' × 8' × 5' high) so the feet go a foot into the ground and I tend to drive stakes in at each corner and fasten to a leg with a jubilee clip, as it doesn't take much wind to topple them over on our rather exposed lottie.

Would be nice to have some seedlings to put in them, but all the rain recently has given easy access for the slugs to the seedlings I had in the seed bed in the garden. The only thing that's untouched is the red cabbage plants....and everything I tried to start indoors has got too leggy. So sowed again outdoors yesterday..........

That does look quite tidy big fella. Something about half that size would be ideal for my brassica 'pockets'

Can I ask why you have debri netting over your greenhouse tho? Presuming its for a bit of shade?

PS They don't seem high enough for brussel sprouts?

Cheers Snadge, yeh I've lost 2 lots of Brassicas due to heat so the netting is for a little shading. The tallest I will be growing under the cages will be cabbages & caulis. If I do decide to grow sprouts & broccoli they will just have to take there chances outside......Unless they can be headed at 3', I don't know, maybe you can tell me.

The cats have destroyed my newly dug bed already so I'm planning on making one of these this coming weekend!

Looks good but the netting looks big enough to let the butterflies through .......last year they were bouncing off the debris netting trying to get in .....determined little b's.......

Hey, that looks great. Very sturdy and will keep the pesky birds away. I lost all my brassicas last year to the rotten things, and tried to make a net structure after I planted in my much nutured plants last weekend. Sadly engineering is not my strong point... one day of rigging an amazing looking structure with poles and string.... one night of 50mph gusts...= one frustrated allotmenteer!! Think I might have a go at something similar.. maybe you should patent!

I created some netting frames by using 25mm MDPE pipe, attached to the beds via 28mm pipe clips, this enables me to move the netting from bed to bed where needed simply by un-clipping the pipes, and clipping them onto another bed. To get the netting tight I am going to add hooks around the beds for the netting to hook onto, at present it is pinned via spare bits of wood.

I'm experimenting with an old divan base with the cover stripped off and netting stapled on instead.
