You will need a junior hacksaw and a drill of the right size. What I would do is buy the materials first so you have both the gutter connector and tank connector in your hand, you will then know what size drill you need.

If you can lay your hand on a scrape end of 22mm copper pipe you can heat this up to cherry red and it will easily do the hole for the tank connecter. I can't say about the gutter connector as they come in slightly different sizes but it would be worth a look.

If you fit the feeder pipe in the right place you will still be able to remove the lid.

      Thank you, thank you.

Looks like this is a project for next weekend.

SS just one more thing, if you are considering getting another butt. Would suggest you think in advance before you start glueing, how you are going to connect the second butt. This will make life much easier when you come to install it.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I'm guessing the downpipe would go into the butt furtherest away from my kitchen.

Not necessarily if you could get them both on the brickwork at the same height then a simple connection between the two at the right height would suffice.

Presuming the tap has a hozelock type connector you can connect 2 buts by linking them with a bit of hosepipe with hozelock connectors and leaving both taps open. Both barrels will then fill up equally. Just remember to turn the taps off before you unplug to use the water.

I still can't quite see how you are going to stop excess water going down the downpipe and overflowing the barrel(s) should you get enough rain.

It won't over flow the butts because the grape is installing an overflow pipe between the butt and her kitchen sink waste pipe. Simples.

The grape will eventually get this installed when she can source the gutter connector gizmo; I have all the other parts.

Mind you I am not short of water at the moment

Umm... If you're adding a downpipe to the guttering at a high point you're not going to get much water down it.

SS I presume you have tried your local plumbers merchant? If you struggle to get the connector let me know and I will have a root round in the back of my van.

Colin, I know you'll be disappointed in me but I haven't managed to get to a proper plumbers merchant. Work and life has conspired against me. The 'sheds' and a local bathroom centre hasn't helped so I'll have to finish work early to get to a decent place.

The project has grown now. I'm going to run an overflow from a water barrel off my greenhouse too. Watch this space.

                        Thanks for you continues support.

Okay, have been to plumber's merchant and with no luck. Chap looked through his catalogue and talked to dep manager.

Dep manager was interested in it too as he wants to put a water butt beneath some guttering so I sent him your photo (not a mug shot, but of your gutter connector ) and he was intrigued. Said he liked a challenge and would see if he could find the manufacturer.

                          Watch this space....................

SS tell him its the same as a connector to connect 3/4 solvent weld overflow pipe to plastic soil pipe.

I will find out the manufacturer and let you know.

                              Hi SS,

The connector is made by Rodetal down here its official name is a 110mm x 21.5mm boss.

As you see from the pic I have one on my desk now, if you continue to struggle PM me your address and I will pop it in a Jiffy bag.

Visited Screwfix, Plumb Centre and the Plastics Centre (waste water chappies) this morning, none of whom could come up with the goods.......... Colin I am admitting defeat and will PM you my address. I really appreciate your help with this.
