  • Turfing on top of manure

Is it possible to lay turf on top of well rotted manure instead of top soil as we have a source of free manure?

Are you trying to make a lawn? What will be underneath the manure?

Yes, we're laying a small lawned area. There will be sand and shingle to aid drainage. The manure is very very well rotted. Maybe a mixture of manure & top soil might be best bet.

Yup! It'll grow! The only real issue with laying Turf is water. Probably not a problem in the UK this year lol!

Level the surface. Lay the Turf. Water it with a sprinkler, for 48 HOURS NON STOP. That should be sufficient. Don't mow it until it has rooted. (Turn over a corner, and you'll see little white roots - if you can't lift a corner - you can definitely mow!) Don't use a heavy mower, or a hover for a few months, but after that it should be fine.

          Good luck!

Make sure that whatever you put under the grass is firmed down, otherwise it'll sink over time and leave you with hollows and bumps (but you knew this, right?)
