  • Can you imagine me, in the DIY store, with the poles, trying to find the right size of pipe to fit It really doesn't bear thinking about
What alternatives are there? Are there "collars" that would fit over the poles to make them the same diameter? or am I overthinking the problem?

    • Does the blue water pipe fit snugly into the bigger pole? If so, you could cut short lengths to fit inside the 25mm poles, then you just need pipe that will fit inside the 20mm poles and inside the short lengths inside the 25mm poles, if that makes sense

I have the solution (sort of)! For some reason my addled brain had been puzzling about connecting a fat pole to a thin pole but that's rubbish. I need something to connect 3 pairs of fat poles and something else for 3 pairs of thin poles.
Still working on that one !!

          • I think MH's suggestion is spot on.............

              • Just imagine, if you will, one of those hooped brassica tunnels but on 4' legs Since I'm only 5' and a bit, with a bit of extra height from the hooped bits, I'd be able to walk inside it - and it could be covered with netting or poly to be a cage or a tunnel
So 6 pairs of uprights, all the same diameter, except at the open ends, where 6 are smaller than the other 6. Yes..........?

                • I still think MH's idea is the way to go.......all 6 uprights are the same diameter with inserts of the smaller pipes then your water pipe inside the inserts. Would that work?

                  • I need to mock it up and try. The blue pipe was a bit loose but it could be bulked up with tape - or maybe I could shave off a bit of the blue pipe to fit inside the narrow one. I don't have any odd bits of smallbore pipe to try out - that's the problem - and I don't want to buy a roll and find it doesn't work.

                    • Try sticking the end of the blue pipe into a jug of very hot water to soften it then see if it will squeeze inside the narrow pole.

I did wonder why you wanted to connect the fat ones to the thin ones, when they are all neatly paired off, but assumed you had an excellent reason that I was just too thick to see

Hmmm.....aren't you going to knock the poles into the ground a bit? A foot? That makes them 3' legs - you'll have to walk inside on bended knees or dig a trench....

I was just going to sit the little plastic feet on the ground but tether it in some way. I'd like it to be movable - but not by the wind Will probably attach one end to an existing fence post or tree and weight down the cover alongside tthe outside edges.
Still not sure what it will be - a fruit cage, brassica cage, polytunnel. Just know it has to have a use - its an idea-in-progress

                            • So what is to stop the individual hoops from just falling over when the wind blows, or will you put a pole or length of wood along the "ridge" to connect them all? I can't see how a cover, however well tied down, will stop the hoops from moving.

                              • Either plastic pipe along the ridge and near the base or I have some black metal curtain poles lying about that might be brought into use
