strawberries (what to do next)

hello group,
we have a bed some 12ft x 4 ft full of strawberry plants, they have just about finished fruiting and i dont know what to do with them next, each plant has runners and seem to be producing more plants but i was told a while ago to cut these runners off and replant them into pots until next year,am i meant to do this or can i leave them in the ground over winter or will the frost kill them?

Strawberries are hardy, so leave your plants in the ground.

The reason for rooting runners into pots is to make it easier to move them. If you leave them in the bed it will become a tangled mess of old and new plants.

Strawberries produce well for about 3 years, then the plants need replacing (this is where your rooted runners come in). If I were you, I think I would select enough of the strongest new plants from the runners to make one more row of plants, and discard the rest.

It would be better to plant your new babies in another bed if you have one.

they are all this years plants so i will have a tidy up in the bed and try and transplant a few smaller runner plants.

It's always too wet & cold for me to work at this time of year, so I always wait until end March/April to sort out the strawberry beds

my allotment has become a bit untidy over the last few weeks due to not being ale to do anything because of the rain and wind, the forecast is supposed to be ok so i will venture up there for a few hours.

you could always plant some up in flower bucket pots,1 per pot,that gives you the option to move them where you wish,as well as save building another bed,
