  • 5 sheets of polycarbonate

What would you do with 5 sheets of polycarbonate roofing?
    It's 1cm cube single layer sheets 8x3ft.
    bit dirty but intact.

The easiest thing I've thought of is just making an upside down V shape cloche with it. I have duck tape - would that be strong enough to hold it together?

It's a bit early for me to get my brain in gear but if you go down the cloche route, get some 8ft lengths of 2"x2" and screw the poly to it, it will give you a 90 degree angle. Then just throw some rope or something over it to anchor it down........You could make 2 cloches & the extra piece could be cut to shape to block the ends, again screwed to a timber frame.

What would you hold it down with? Duck tape would probably hold it together for a while, but it wouldn't stop it blowing away?

I don't know really - just musing over it - the sheets blowing away would be a disaster for anything in their way.

Make some uprights with one vertical which are then placed on top of the V shaped cloche.

The Vertical is just touching on top of the cloche and the uprights about 20cm into the ground. At the ground level the edges of the cloche touch the wood.

One at each end and one every 2-3 meters would ensure that your cloche is securely anchored at the sides and top. And easily removed for access...

Needs a timber frame around its edges. Then you can hinge two sides and the weight of the timber would keep it weighted. Makes cracking cloches.

I had cloches made from secondary glazing panels. To keep them in position, take a length of wood slightly longer than the width that you want the cloche to be. Cut two inward facing angled grooves in it, one each end. Slot the panels into these grooves so that the tops rest against each other. You will probable need 2 or 3 of these wooden pieces, spaced along the length of the panel.
I used clips made from pieces of bent metal to hold them together but you may have to think of something else for the polycarb. One option would be to screw cup hooks into the ends of the wood and use those to tie clothes line over the top, or for hooking bungee cords.

I was given some by a chum, who was replacing their conservatory roof with glass. We used it as a shed roof, when the old one rotted. It's a bit warm in there in the summer, but there's no need to put the light on for most of the year!

We just bunged nails through, and duct-taped over the top of the row of nail-heads. It isn't pretty, but it works, and no one can see it behind the hedge!

We have some pallet wood and scaff boards and I have an OH who is very good at DIY .. with a myriad of junk in his garage.
I also have the bedhead and stead of a metal frame bed... Was thinking of keeping that for french beans ... but who knows now ..

Roofing Poly usually comes in triple 10mm thickness.
