Labelling fruit trees!

Have you wondered how to make a longlasting label for your fruit trees that will cost you nothing? With 36 trees to label I needed a solution and.........I've just thought of one
Take an unwanted CD and write on it with permanent marker pen (I've used a Freezer marker). Tie it to the tree with string or wire and it may even scare the birds away too
All I need are 30 more CDs and I'm finished

We have tried this and hope you dont live in a windy area, as after the sun makes them brittle in a couple of years the wind smashes them against the tree/post and they shatter. As present I am experimenting with plastic cut outs from 2 litre milk bottles and permanent marker, but suspect this may go the same way.

The only surefire way seems to be mapping/plotting. I learnt that from working in a crematorium where labelling is paramount, you have to know which plant/tree is dedicated to whom when metal thieves steal dedication plaques.

I am simply not that organised at home though to keep up the practise,hence the interest in labelling.

I tried this with "normal" crops last year and even "permanent " marker fades very quickly on plastic.

This year I'm using strips of old broken trellis with permanent marker, on the theory that the marker soaks into the wood.

I wondered about squares of wood with painted names but CDs seemed a lot quicker

I wrote on one of my fruit tree sticks (the white ones from Wilkinsons) in pencil in 2009 and it is still on there!
