Pallet problem

I am having the dickens of a job taking pallets apart. Is there an idiot proof way of doing this without splitting the wood. My best effort was when the wood was wet!

Angle grinder? Cuts through the nails rather than trying to lever them out. Never tried it, but was given a stack of pallet wood that had been separated that way.

I used a 4 ft long pinch bar and a 2lb mash hammer to get mine apart.

Use the spars as a pivot point and work your way across the slatted side until you get to the last one, then use the mash hammer to smack the hell out of one of the blocks.

You might find that by easing up one end of the pallet spar before easing off the middle then the other end before prising it off fully will help stop the wood from splitting. I smashed a few spars before I sussed out what I was doing.

I saw a video on youtube the other day showing a nice and easy way to demolish pallets - cant remember what it was called but a search should find it for you.

I got a denailer from B&Q a couple of years ago when I was stripping pallets. Think it was about £8. It has a nice wide flat end with a v in it. It only took a couple of minutes to strip a pallet with it.

I've just been out to the outhouse to see if I could get a pic of it for you but I couldn't see it there so I think its down the allotment.

I use a mattock stand on the pallet smash the blocks out around the edge
Turn over smash middle block out.
Then you have top and bottom separated.
Bash off any bits of block off.
with a pair of nips snip the nails off then you should
be able to pry the two bits of wood apart with the mattock by levering
off the wood slat next to the one your taking off then work your way along.

Wouldn't bother with the blue pallets you will just end up with a pile
Of kindling.

I find it to be a war of attrition, particularly with the well made pallets. I have 2 wrecking bars, a club hammer, and a hydrualic car jack. I first bash to smaller broader wrecking bar into a joint then lever with the longer bar. Once there is a samll gap, I put the jack between the top and bottom frame, pump and hey it will part nicely. continue in this way. Then all there is to do is denailing.

Mr VVG uses a pick axe in a levering capacity. Depends on quality of the wood he assures me. We use American pallets with plain nails which twist easier. The UK ones use annular nails on cheaper wood, which I'm told are a b*****d to get out! I think that's a technical term
