  • Connecting a water butt to a narrow downpipe

Ok thinking caps on. From my shed I have 50mm guttering and downpipe . I want to connect it to a water butt but due to the position of it (squeezed in between raised bed and the shed) I can't just connect to another piece of downpipe angled into the water butt. I had an idea to connect the downpipe to a piece of flexible tubing which I could bend into the hole on the side of the water butt. Trouble is I can't find anything to connect 50mm downpipe to 25mm piping, that doesn't cost about £20.
I am open to all sorts if suggestion, as Heath Robinson as you like. I was thinking of a top of a plastic bottle and Duck tape.

50mm universal swept waste tee, 50 x 25 rubber adaptor availble from your plumbers merchant about £8. If you go down this route it would pay to take a sample of your pipe with you.

That sounds impressive I could go along and sound like I know what I am talking about! Many thanks.

If you reduce the pipe size that is where the dirt, leaves etc will cause a blockage, this I know from personal experience. So you end up doing the job again using large pipe for the whole run.
The plastic pipe can be made flexible with boiling water but you can only make slow bends without it kinking, so some practice on scrap pipe is best, fill the pipe with sand and when hot, plus of course your wearing thick gloves, you can make the bends needed. Goes hard again when cold.

There's another idea. That's what's great about the Vine. Thanks again.

Plastic bottles of suitable size, tops and bottoms removed with super sharp knife, but duck tape only lasts about a year in the elements. But cheap and easy while you sort out a permanent solution.

I used a couple of bends sections cut into my down pipe to put a horizontal section in to take my downpipe out to my water butt. You should be able to get two for under a tenner. No need to try and connect a different sized pipe then. I did mine three years ago with no problems.
