  • Shed paint what and where

Used to paint my shed with creosote but don't see it around any more.
    Can you still get it.
All I can get is that watery stuff that lasts about a month and then needs re-coating.
Maybe old engine oil might work ?

    Any ideas ?
    Thanks

I managed to get some genuine creosote from an agricultural supplier called Wynstay up here in the north west. My grandad used to have hundreds of hen cabins and he always mixed creosote with old engine oil from the tractors 50/50 some of the cabins are still going strong 80 years on!

I use Garden Shades when I can find it on special offer. The blue in my avatar is "Iris" and the shed was painted once.

Now I have my new shed in "sage". Again, painted once (2008), not every year

        I've used this product too.

I only painted my shed this year but my folks had a garden building done about 5 years ago and it's not needed re-doing as yet, still looks great. That was on new wood though so it was pretty absorbant not sure how well it would go over something like creosote.

Mine is a lovely green called Willow but I'm sure they do more manly shades too!

I think if its already had numerous coats of creosote it may be best to stick with it as it can be devilish stuff to key to, think the stuff I got was called bartoline

Might give "Garden Shades" a go.
Any creosote will have worn off years ago.
            Does one coat suffice ?
            Thanks

I use Wickes own brand and funnily find it very good. Strange when their ordinary paint is carp.

My shed was typical shed paint red and needed 2 - 3 coats (depending on how weathered bits were) to get good, thorough coverage.

As it's water based though it does dry nice and quick!

Just bought a 5 litre can from Next of all places (own brand) only cost £9 which is a bargain compared with main brands. Have given it a try and it covers well. Time will tell if it really is any good but looks ok for now.

If it has already got layers of paint on it, and you don't want to faff about rubbing down, get some Barn Paint. Ruddy expensive, but you'll only have to paint it about once every twenty years!

I painted my shed with the Wilko stuff and 3 summers later it wants painting again - so their stuff is cheap and not very cheerful. I'll use the Cuprinol stuff this time
