  • Wanted - extra large "staples"

I want to put some planks, on their side, to make the edge of a raised bed - just one plank high. If one could buy something like this

but large enough to drop over both sides of the plank, a good whack with a mallet would hold it in place. That would be just within my DIY limits
Is there such a thing? If not, why not?
    Any alternatives?

Something like this, but just a long run of plank on one side of the greenhouse.
Please don't suggest that I use a drill and attach bits of wood to the plank !!

Going on from that ^^^. if I could drop something like Jeanie suggests, but much longer, over the plank it would hold it upright - no skill required!!

Do you need it to go down the sides and into the ground? If so I'm sure there must be stuff in builders merchants that get used in holding roof beams together. Just depends how deep your plank is. Could you whack in two stakes of wood with a gap between to slot the plank into?

Just seen pic. Can you do something like I did in the tunnel?

I make all sorts of temporary beds VC - I put 2 short canes in a line deep into the soil, lean the plank on them and then put two more canes on the other side to pin it in place. Then four tennis balls or play balls on top to warn people there is another temporary bed there. It's great for random compost beds/raising a space for a year/putting leaf mould in etc etc...

I've done the 2 stakes thing before, M, but it looks a bit messy the way I do it!!

That's the sort of thing I want to do but I'm trying to think of a way to make it "smooth" so that the lawnmower can run alongside it.
I need a barrier to keep the mower away from the GH glass, so I'm trying to put a bed around the GH on 3 sides - although only one side is at risk from the mower. The other 2 sides are raised on blockwork anyway.

I think I've found a way to do it Heavy wire, pliers and bolt cutters

I haven't pushed the wires right down so that you can see them. There are 3 on that plank!
Thanks for letting me talk it over with you

Or nail some peices of 3cmx3cm to one side of the plank long enough to be bashed into the ground. Nail them on with galvanized nails, with a twist if you can find them. That will give you a smooth side to run the mower against.

I see you have it sorted now, but in similar circumstances go to your local garage (not a main dealer) and ask them to make it for you, take a drawing with mesurments etc. I was always doing little jobs like this, it relieves the tedium of crawling under cars.

ah, ya pipped me to it! what might look a bit better would be to buy some lenghts of 8mm re-bar (the sort they use to reinforce concrete) they normally come in 6m lengths so just cut into 3 pieces of 2 m for transport oh, they cost 2€ for 6 metres, so not too bad, and a lot sturdier than thick wire and can be cut with the bolt cutters in your pic, then once you have them into 50cm lengths or whatever, push them 5cm in a hole 1 by 1 lets say for example the hole your padlock goes through on your garden shed? then bend the metal, then push in another 5cm then bend again creating a
