Design a tumbling composter!!

Instead of using castors, could you use sections of metal pipe like scaffolding pole (the length of the barrel) to act as rollers. This would spread the weight and support the length. A bit like those rollers on luggage carousels?

Do you have an engineering degree or something, I am constantly amazed at your ideas.

I reckon a large aluminium beer keg would be the ultimate. My brother in law was production manager for a company in Burton that made the damn things, pity I didnt know then what I know now.

The ideal soloution would be for the centre bar to run on bearings. Something similar to these: Not sure how they would fasten though.

If you know someone with access to a laithe it would be a doddle to machine a thick pipe to accept the bearing as an interference fit, then weld two flanges on to bolt to the barrel. Sometimes you can find bearing carriers in scrap yards on old machinery.
