  • Stackable seed trays - for nothing!

or, more precisely, next to nothing

We all use these, I presume? You can get them for nothing from supermarkets, mushrooms and spring onions come in them. If you make friends with an assistant they will save them for you. Mine come from Lidl, they save loads for me.

The problem is, once you have seedlings in them they aren't stackable any more (no room for the seedlings to grow)

So, to give a little headroom you need one, or more, of these

They are available from the big DIY retailer, found in just about every out of town shopping centre (OK, it's B&Q ) - 20mm thick wall conduit - 3metre length costs £1.98.

Ok - here's what you do.

Cut the conduit into 5 inch (125mm) lengths - I use my chop saw with a fixed stop at 125mm, but you can mark it with a pencil and cut it with a small hacksaw or a handsaw.

These then fit nicely (a good push fit) into the holes underneath the trays and stack perfectly on each other.

One 3 metre length of conduit gives 17 sets of 4, enough "risers" for 18 trays, at a cost of 11p per set.

Brilliant idea george I always make a beeline for those trays but I think everyone else around here does too. Never thought of asking to have them put aside for me Must see what I can do

Yep, but if you are growing on cuttings/seedlings the extra headroom is a boon - plus because the trays themselves are a lattice construction watering is quite easy.

When you want to un-stack them the 'risers' stay jammed in the bottom of the tray - you can stand them on the floor and water without waterlogging them.

Or remove the legs & stand them in large gravel trays.
