  • Erecting a green house, first timer

Im bidding on a green house lean to off ebay. I would love a green house I dont think I would ever be out of it but Im worried about putting one up.

Im not a "delicate" lady so I can lift screw stuff together etc etc but Im worried about putting the glass in and stuff like that.

    Any advice anyone

If its a lean-to make sure you can fix it to the wall firmly before you start.

Also when taking one down where to start as it has all the glass in and its buyer to dismantle :s

I don't know how lean-tos are attached to the wall - I've only had freestanding ones.
If its a 2nd hand one be sure that you know how its assembled as it probably won't have any instructions.

Taking the glass out is easy.
I was given a greenhouse a few years ago, the glass was easy to take out and put in. Although I needed a hand (my step Dad who is super) to unscrew (plenty of WD40!) and dismantle the frame and also put it back together again, ensuring the frame was square.

If you have to take it down use an indelible marker pen or sticky labels to mark each piece in relation to other pieces, take loads and loads of pictures, once the glass is out try to remove whole sections rather than take down every little piece. If bolts are rusty or nuts rounded off cut them off with an angle grinder (wear glasses).
If your base is not level then it will create tension that could crack your glass, try to rectify that.
Securing it to the house wall means drilling your wall and putting in plastic plugs to screw the frame too, dont skimp on this as wind can do a lot of damage. Screw or otherse secure it to the ground well.

Oh and dont stack glass in big piles, a bump in the road can crack the lot, transport it on its edge if you can well secured with bubble wrap or old sheets.

              otherwise its a doddle.

Yes my long list of things might be daunting but it really is'nt, take all the glass out first, you are bound to break a few but any glazier store will soon cut new ones while you wait.
A few days before, spray the nuts with Wd40 this will make them easier to remove, try not to get it all over the glass. You can soon get replacements from B&Q. All the bits like the clips that hold the glass in are easily available if you break a few. Of course it may not be glass but polycarbonate sheets, these are lighter and harder to break.
Use proper size spanners or small sockets, pliers just damage the small nuts.

I picked up a cheap ratchet set and it turned out to be invaluable with the countless nuts and bolts.
I was waiting a long time to get my GH and get started. I watched a lot of YouTube videos in the mean time and that was a great education.
I also assembled most of the panels in the kitchen over a few nights. Then brought them outside where I quickly put them together. It took a lot of the pressure off. You can run into a problem and find your daylight running out. So do what you can indoors if you think time is short.

Another little question ? What sort of leanto GH is it? There are all sorts, of various sizes, materials and construction. So, a few measurements and info on what its made of, would help.

Be careful when handling the glass, even it none break they will still have sharp edges so I would suggest a suitable pair of gloves.

So glad you asked this question Jen

I've been offered a greenhouse by a neighbour but I'm terrified on how to remove the glass as I'm not very good with DIY. Having nightmares that if I remove the wrong pain the whole lot will go like a deck if cards.

A green house doesn't rely on the glass to support it. SO you need have no worries there, but the glass obviously needs the framework to support it so dont go taking away framework until you have removed all the glass.
