  • Lifting levels and turfing

I have a rear garden that slopes towards the house. The level of the garden is approx 0.5m lower at the house. I want to raise the garden so it's level using timber sleepers. Can I reuse the turf or bury it and cover with new topsoil and use new turf?

Either, just depends on how confident you are at cutting & rolling turves from what was the original lawn

Personally I would lift the turf, build up the ground and replace the original turf. You should be able to get it smooth enough that you can subsequently build up any small hollows with more soil/sand and let the grass grow through it.

Even if the grass is a bit patchy it's easier to put a bit more seed on in the spring than it is to fully re-turf.

Mind you, a lot depends on how fussy you are about creating a flawless lawn. (I'm not, I was happy to have a nice mix of low-growing wildflowers in mine).
