  • Filling in Reduntant Pond

Hi all, I'm filling in a four foot deep pond which has solid clay in the bottom which is not letting the water drain away. What should I use to fill the large hole up with? I have some very large pieces of rubble ie cement and huge amount of small rubble. I'm worried that filling the hole with this is going to raise the water table. I eventually want to pave the hole. Many thanks for looking. Annieb

Is it a proper pond? And has it been there for a while? If it has it surely will have a lot of wildlife in it

Might be best to check it out before you fill it in, if it has certain things living in it you could even get in trouble for filling it in, greater crested newts etc, I bet there will be frogs hibernating in there as well at this time of year

This was a 12' pond divided into two and filled to the brim with brick rubble and evil smelling water. I'm filling in two thirds of it so it is more manageable. It has been well constructed with three layers of liner and carpet. The only wildlife is a massive host of very large land snails.

If the pond has a liner, you'll need to remove it, and either way, you'll have to break up the bottom surface of the pond if you want the area to drain properly. Whatever you then fill the hole with, will need compacting before you resurface it, as it will sink over time, and you'll have remedial works to do in a few years.

12' isn't a huge pond. I would be tempted to take out and skip the brick rubble and turn it back into a viable pond.
