Greenhouse advice please

Ok so I've aquired a greenhouse that was skittle abused by the recent winds I have a new less panes of glass than needed. Now I've been looking into hear sinks and solar heating and came up with this thought maybe someone can offer me some thoughts also now instead of replacing the panes £6 + vat a pain I need 6 eek...! I wondered weather wooden panels painted on the north facing side ( allotment is south facing as is greenhouse) Would benifictal or hinder I'm thinking that the black wood would heat up during the day and expel at night ? Is this right or am I doing myself no favours ?

Personally I would replace the missing panes with polycarb or perspex. I think by boarding it up you would be cutting out the light & the heat.......I think you would have a potting shed as opposed to a greenhouse. Just my twopenneth.

I think a GH needs glass all round as BM has said. I would look around for glass, I bought some last year for £3 per pane, from a glazier. Freecycle is also worth a shot.

Cheers guys yeah I'll hold out and get some for of glass /Perspex/poly stuff i expect I'll find some in a skip at some point

In the short term you could make frames to fit and cover the frames with clear plastic film while waiting to find glass.

Is there any panes in the north facing wall you could use, and put white painted boards in those? If light doesn't enter through those panels, maybe reflecting light back in could be an option (I'm thinking black panels could get too hot in strong sun and scorch plants).

Just thinking out loud here and I could be very wrong as I've never done it

You could replace the bottom part of the GH glass with wood then it'd be a bit like this :-

You can buy sheets of twin wall plastic off fleabay that will replace the glass an isn't too bad on price ( some are 4ft x 2ft so will cover the sides) and if you seal these with a bit o silicone sealer they will keep i warmer and wont rot.

Hi

I have a quick question to ask you all.

I am currently in the process of building a mini greenhouse type structure. I've constructed the frame for it (outlined red in one image), built the doors (which I'll mount this weekend) and then I'll measure up each panel for ordering polycarbonate sheeting.

The back fence is north facing (there will eventually be flats/houses built behind it (but not too close).

My question relates to the areas outlined green - what should I put here - polycarbonate sheets, polystyrene, bubble wrap, something else?

I want to leave the horizontal fence plank showing so I can use it to build a small shelf from.

A little confused with your question.... Are you asking what to use for the back panel of your mini greenhouse ?

I'm puzzled too. You want to cover the vertical planks in the fence but not the horizontal plank?
