leaking pond liner.

I've been asked by one of my elderly customers to replace the leaking pondliner in her pond. From memory it's been there for up to 15 years and all her marginal plants are well established. I've been wondering if patching the liner is a realistic possibility. Anyone had any experience of this?

Yes. Fail. Gave up and bought a new liner.

The plants would probably benefit from being divided now, anyway. You could sell the 'spares' and share the profit.

It would depend on what the liner was made from. Our one, from memory was some kind of woven fabric, that was difficult to patch, but I believe butyl liners are repairable. Perhaps you need a quick g**gle...

This won't help (sorry) but we just replaced our rigid liner in the school pond and that had quite a substantial crack in it which we hadn't really noticed until we took it out. It also had a blooming great rock sitting in the crack so the cause had also limited the damage so I don't know if you can create a "plug".

Since re-lining we have had problems with the new pond overflowing! I just hope that's because 19" is an unusual amount of liquid sunshine even for here.

It is a butyl liner so it may be possible to patch it. Fingers crossed. I suspect however it wil lbe a new liner.

Marchogaeth, nope it doesn't help but nonetheless it is interesting. I don't think I would have been inclined to use a rigid liner in a school situation. Too many kids willing to chuck rocks in

How deep is it AP?.........do you need to borrow VC's snorkel & wetsuit to seal it in situ?.......I'm sure sealant that is used on fish tanks would do the job..

AP first check with your client if their liner came with a guarantee I know ours had a 20 one.

nope, snorkel and wetsuit not needed. It has totally drained

Bren, seriously, I talked to her on the telephone today about it. She said " I think my gardener is going to try to do something about it". I am her gardener .

Her memory is getting to the stage where I might need to consider stopping working for. I know that sounds hard but I have had a bad experience in the past which I won't allow to be repeated.

Did my liner about 5 years ago with the Cold Glue tape and its still OK.

Have to say the split was very clean so I don't know how well it would work if it was jagged edged.

The hardest job was getting the liner clean before application, but at about £6 per metre it might well be worth a try.

I wasn't there when it went in. Sadly, I think getting rid of it will be the highlight of my teaching career! If the weather ever lets up and we get it finished I'll be putting up pic's. I strongly suspect it was and adult who put the rock in - it weighed about half of what the children do and was right in the middle!
