The less spare glass you have to play with, the harder it is to cut the bit you need. . Having said that, I don't disagree with anything that has been said on this thread except a glass cutter for a couple of quid just isn't worth having. A good quality cutter is worth every penny.

If buying glass for an old greenhouse, be sure to make sure you don'y buy 600mm x 600mm to replace 24" x24". You need 610mm x 610mm.

I'm an old hand at cutting old glass. This was after transporting many sheets in the back of my car sittingover the edge of a rubber bootliner with a v shaped edge. Almost a dozen breakages. A dozen cuts meant I didn't need to buy many replacement sheets and yes, practice makes perfect

Back in the 60s before the advent of glazing companies the plumber did the glazing work. About the only thing I did not cut was the shaped glass for specialist leaded lights. This work went to the specialists in Nottm this was Pope & Parr. I used to love watching those blokes work it didn't seem to matter what shape was required how uneven the surface of the glass was they always came up trumps.

About the only thing I do now is cut holes for window extractors and the like.

Does that mean it's also easier to break? Every winter I have to replace a couple. The ones that crack are always the old ones...

I think I'm getting old, I read how easy/hard is it to cut grass?

My first thought was by hand or with a lawnmower?

It's not age Mikey it's the sign of a highly developed brain using it's own version of predictive text. This is a gardening forum and your brain was expecting grass not glass.(I did the same thing)
