  • Fencing to keep out dog

    Hi all,

I'm looking to fence off part of my garden to create a separate area for the dog and baby. I'm looking for something see through (like picket fence of similar) otherwise the dog will go mental if we're out there and he can't see. Needs to be about 3 foot high, anything less and he'll be able to jump over, anything higher will look silly.

Also we may be moving house soon, so I'd rather not spend a lot and it would be great if we could take it with us, and return the garden to normal for any potential buyers.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Hmm before we start, what kind of dog is it? Some dogs are good hurdlers

You can get wire dog pens, look online. My dog is confined to the downstairs by a baby gate on the stairs - she is a Springer - and it is about 2 ft 6" high.

Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Well behaved springer, mine could get over a 5 bar gate.

He's a golden retriever. I don't want to shut him out of the whole garden, just the part where we have the babies swing and slide, stop him pooing everywhere!!

Train him to use one bit of the garden and clear up after him.

I'm going to be controversial and suggest some training

What works: practice sitting outside with the dog for short periods, and get it to sit/lie down quietly. (wear it out with a long walk or a run beforehand).
Tie it to a stake/shed if necessary to begin with.
When it does, reward it immediately with a piece of fave food (roast chicken, crabsticks etc). It will soon learn that being good brings a treat.

We shouldn't leave dogs unattended in gardens: they bark at anything & eat all sorts of things they shouldn't.

Even if he were trained to go in one particular place I couldn't be 100% sure he wouldn't poo in the wrong place. I'm sure all you dog owners know what picky up a poorly dogs poo can be like! Never get all of it, hence the fencing.

OK, I'll be controversial again, might as well be consistent. Biscuit-fed dogs have sloppy, hard-to-pickup poops. Raw fed dogs have small, firm, easy poops.
I compost all my dogs' poops, but it doesn't go on the veg beds, only on shrubs & flowers, and it's brilliant stuff.

If your dog is wormed regularly, you have no danger from worms.
