  • Siting a compost bin

    Hi all

Hoping to get my compost bin in the next few days, and know where it is going in the garden. At the moment it's covered in weeds, do these need clearing or shall I just put the daleks on top?

    Thanks for advice

If it is a black Dalek type I would put it in full sun, 'coz the black surface heats up nicely.

I like my bins to be on soil, rather than a solid base like concrete, so soil bugs / worms etc. can migrate upwards. So straight on top of weeds will be fine (but preferably in full sun I reckon)

I re-sited my bins the other day and there were growing weeds in my compost, it made it quite difficult to shovel it up so I put cardboard down first this time to see if that helps.

I'm not so sure these weeds had actually grown up through the compost, I think they are a creeping weed (possibly ground elder, I'll need to check) that creeped it's way under the bin from the fence.

It's also a good idea to make sure your soil is loose and you can push the bin down into it so as there are no gaps letting light in.

Just don't put it on top of bindweed, cos the bluddy stuff will grow right through it

Good points about not siting it on top of Pernicious weeds.

Thanks guys. No bindweed (that I'm aware of) just so many dandelions looks like a yellow carpet!

I think I'd be digging those up first.

Dandelions seem to be out in force at the moment. I have a wooden compost bin, and its in a shady corner, were its unlikely much stuff would grow.
