Im totally new to gardening (as anybody who has read my intro will know) but since buying a house with a decent size and positioned garden I really want to make it a productive place so plenty of fruit and veg.
Invention #1: The Low Flying Greenhouse. Having fitted a new bathroom I ended up with a bath that was going to go straight to the tip. However, a brainwaves struck me so I have buried the tub in a pit at the end of the garden. The 'pit is full of sand/dirt and is so sterile even the weeds arent growing in it. Plenty of stones/gravel as a base then backfilled with the sand. As it happens I also have lots of double glazed window panels and one fits right over the top of the tub nicely.
Invention #2: The Soil Processing Facility. Got fed up with backache 15 years ago so needed to find a way to process some of the excess ground I have dug up. As luck would have it there were 3 daleks at the bottom of the garden and a couple of Bulk Bags (1000Kg sand carrier). Somewhat annoyingly the B&Q sieve is just a bit too small to sit in the top of the dalek but 2 bits of timber have solved that. All I do is put the Dalek inside the Bulk Bag and drop 2 shovels of mixed dirt in. Give it a good shake and all the best stuff falls through the Dalek, the stones go into a pile to the right and the composter is to the right. Once the Dalek gets a bit full, just lift it up, spread the dirt about in the bag and replace the Dalek. Need to build a platform for when the bag gets more than 1/2 full as its too high to lift the spade to fill the seive.
Invention #3: The Instant Growing Box. At work we get a lot of big heavy stuff delivered and a lot of it is on pallets. One place ships us stuff on Euro Pallets with collapsible side panels and we receive so many that they just get chucked away. Already recovered 2 from work, 1 is a composter, the other will be sorted out as a sand (or soil?) pit for our baby boy. There is a big concrete base at the end of the garden which used to be a fish pond but was filled and concreted over. Total waste of space until the collapsible box idea struck me. I reckon 4 pallets, each with 2 collars on will make for some serious growing space. The light is very good most of the day where I plan to site them.
What unusual items have you converted into useful gardening equipment then?
