  • Best varnish for outdoor wooden plant box.

    Hi,

I have built two wooden plant boxes and wondered what varnish to use.

First to protect the wood from the English weather and second a varnish that won’t harm the plants inside the box.

The wood is pine so don’t really want to paint them so a varnish would be better I want to still be able see the wood.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I would invest in a really good yacht varnish. It's not cheap but far superior to ordinary varnish. It's completely waterproof and has excellent U V protection.

the cheapest place to buy is usually a boat jumble although I once drove 100 miles to get some marvellous French yacht varnish.

      Greenishfing Hi,

Thanks for the response. I was thinking of yacht varnish too I’m just wondering if it would be okay with the plants.

      Thanks again.

Well if you don't use antifoul on top of it algae, barnacles and seaweed all attach themselves happily.

Edit: Not on the allotment of course

Yes I can see that anti-fouling paint would not help in my situation unless I want to use it as a boat but i think the drainage holes may cause a problem.
