  • Save on compost

If you are using a large pot or bin no need to fill the whole thing with compost.
Fill it (maybe half way?) with empty plastic milk containers, lids on, put gravel or pebbles in gaps, then add compost to easily accommodate the roots of what you are planting.
Better than using a load of small pots which will dry out quickly.

I was given a very tall planter and filled the first couple of containers with water for extra stability, and put an upturned plate on top to make a steady base for parking a plant pot on top, which has a hosta in it.
Well out of reach of slugs!

Good idea. However you are doomed to disappointment on the slug side of it, those little beggars can climb a vertical wall 40 ft high.
