  • Repainting the summerhouse - need your advice please!

When we bought our house the summerhouse needed painting. OK we live on an exposed site and nothing had been done to the house for at least 10 years so we were expecting to do a lot of work. We did the summerhouse with a product for sheds etc. so after two years when the bare wood was showing through we decided that it was false economy and painted the whole thing again with a better (Cuprinol) product. Now another two years have gone by and the west wall which gets ALL the weather is back to bare wood again.
OH says we need to use paint as the gloss on our window frames has lasted over 5 years without deterioration.
I know this would mean priming, undercoat and glass and I am prepared to do it if the finish would last a decent length of time.

Any help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
    David

Hi I have just stripped the windows at the back of the house and am finishing them with tung oil. It is meant to be totally weather proof and will not peel or come of. Will need a light sand down and reapply every year or so. It looks lovely as you can see the grain of the wood.

      Thanks Bal.
I am sure that your windows will look great but this old summerhouse needs more than stripping down if I go back to bare timber. The structure is at least 30 years old and has split, been patched, filled, mended and patched again so unless I take all the timber off and start again it will never look half decent with a clear finish. That's why we are considering painting with an external gloss or eggshell finish.

Use barn paint by bedec it's expensive but is absolutely brilliant,my gf is a painter and decorator and uses it all the time for exterior work.it will go on and last much better than gloss and you can use it on plastic and metal

Thanks Buddy, I've looked it up and asked for a local stockist.
