  • Strawberry planter idea

I have a couple of 30 gallon blue drums being unused and thought I might be able to turn them into strawberry planters.

My plan is to cut them in two from top to bottom, laying them top to top and then creating a spine out of a 3x3 fence post. Once connected together I can then sink two more posts into the ground to attach the spine and create an elevated trouth at say 4 foot high. Once attached, create drainage holes and add mdpe hoops to take netting.

Do you think this will work? I should probably of checked with Big Mally as he seems to be master of invention.

Phew!...........Nowt like pressure..................I don't fully understand what the final thing is going to look like but the first concern I have is the weight. A half barrel filled with compost is gonna need some serious supports. If the barrels are spare as you suggest, why not cut one in half as you say & only make one planter out of one of the halves then assess whether to put it on legs or not. I personally would sit it on the floor with timber on each end hammered into the ground to stop it rocking. It will still be approx 12" high.

Edit: I'm assuming that both top & bottom have closed ends.

Assumption is correct BM, never considered the weight. I will get it drawn up and will probably make more sense. As ever grateful for the honest response.

just thought it would keep it out of the reach of slugs.

Are you very tall, Greenleaves? Being a little dwt myself, I'd have difficulty tending to a 4' high planter - waist height would be better, I think.
Do the barrels have lids - or are you joining them together at the top, because they're open?
I don't quite follow the "spine" idea - is it to support the weight of the barrels?
If you cut a barrel in half lengthways, won't it lose some of its rigidity? Will it cope with the weight of soil?

Waist high is not a measurement VC after all you would be on your tippy toes to reach my waist high.
