How long will grass take to rot down?

Hello

Have lots of grass on my allotment and as I am digging and weeding I am finding the grass to be the most pain in the bum thing to remove. If I turn it (so the grass is facing down in the ground a couple of inches down) how long will it take to rot down? Will it be workable by feb/march time next year?

Depends on what sort of grass it is, normal grass pretty quick, the dreaded couch grass, never!

it is very hard to dig at this time of year, because it's in full photosynthesis and very strong. Covering it up for the summer will substantially weaken, if not kill, it completely.

I'm covering my weedy paths with wet newspapers at the mo, and the ground is clear & clean after about 5 weeks

I'm covering the majority if my plot with cardboard for now but am wanting to put some winter veg in the front so I'm not sat around doing nothing so have dug about one third back from the front. This is still such a large area that I won't need it all, hence the question.

This time of year you will probably get hay! Can't you just put it in a heap to rot then spread it on the beds.

I'm pulling the majority of it up I'm just making sure really I don't have to spend ages getting every last blade of grass up
