  • Want To Redesign My Mothers Garden

Hello everyone so my mothers garden needs a make over I have never took on a project like this before I will attach pictures of the garden to show the state it is in and here is what I plan on doing any constructive ideas more than welcome

    So Here Is The Plan

I want to deweed all the growth
Remove all the stones and level out the garden
I want to put down grass insted of the stones
    And also repaint fences

And build a raised flower bed example here
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B--i7Cv8ffA

And was also thinking of building a BBQ something along the lines of this
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qioquqw8qI0

So here wee go what is the best possible way to do this here is my idea

Rake all stones up chuck them level the ground out and lay new soil then grass seeds
    and maybe some seats

Not to sure about building the bbq as of yet but should be a simple job

Can you guys and gals tell me what all I will need to succeed in this project what tools and stuff will I need, I am a complete noob when it comes to this sort of thing but seems like an easy enough job for the beginner

An exciting project. I can't get a really good idea of what the garden is like. Could you take the washing in and take a picture from an upstairs window. I'm not sure what the third picture is meant to show. Before you start it would be worth checking what your mum wants. It is low maintenance now with no lawn but who is going to mow the lawn and do you have access to a lawn mower?
Of the jobs you propose I would start with any fence repairs as you will have easy access before putting in any borders. Certainly remove the stones but don't get rid of them, you may well reuse them elsewhere in the garden. For example leaving an access path. Difficult to say whether you will be able to sow grass seed straight onto the soil as we don't know the condition of the soil underneath. What shape are you going to make the lawn? In a small garden circles work well as ether are easy to mow with no fiddly sections. What 's left is the borders, although if you want raised beds this would be trickier. Just a few thoughts to start off.

I would be tempted to work around the gravel as you are gonna need paths. Either string out where you want the lawn etc to go or lay hosepipe down, that will give your mother an idea of how it may or may not work & she can then decide how she wants it. Bag the rest of the gravel & maybe use as a mulch on the borders.

Hi WendyC I live in a bungalow so birds eye veiw might be a bit hard I might climb the shed lol,

The 3rd picture was just showing what sort of gravel was underneath

The washing is out at the minute but once down I will upload another picture asap

I am willing to mow the lawn for my mother I was thinking if I can do a good enough job I might get a wee bit of bussines else where

The fence is in good enough nic just a paint job I would think I will have to look up on how to border a garden

As for the stones a rake and spade would remove these alright ?

For an access path I will have to look up see what would suit best at the minute im just scanning ideas

As for the grass seed I was thinking about leveling out the garden placing new soil and then the grass seed does that sound alright to do ?

I was wanting to put the grass all where the stones are and putting like a border round the perimiter for flowers to go in just an idea might not happen what would you sugest ?

Raised beds arnt a must was just an idea I thought of but maybe some corner seats or something not to sure yet

Thanks for your quick reply WendyC I am only 24 and would love to try this out as a project because I would like to start my own gardining bussines some day so I think this would be a great start to prove myself also what sort of tools would be recommended for this project, Thanks in advance to any help and especially to WendyC

Just a thought, does your mum have any thoughts about she'd like to have? Colour schemes, flowers, fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, pond? That kind of thing, or have you got a complete 'free hand'?

                  Hi Noob and welcome
A good project to cut your teeth on but my advice would be to keep it simple and low maintenance. Have you drawn up a plan of what you and your Mother would like. Its always best to get your thoughts down on paper before you change anything. Measure up the garden, work out where North is, whether there are any trees or shaded areas. Also any permanent features, like the shed that you want to keep.
Then, show us your plan and let us have another think about it. We like projects

If you are thinking of using this as a stepping stone to setting up your own business, it may be good if your mother decides what she wants as you won't have a free reign with future customers.
