I am thinking of making my own greenhouse. I was just wondering has anyone else on here ever done it and if so is it worth it?

I think it would probably cost more to make one from scratch than buying a second hand one.

I once turned an old shed into a greenhouse. Problem was, the wood rotted at ground level.

But what if I can get the wood for free. Would it still be a good idea to make your own?

If you get free wood, then clad the frame with them corrugated see through roofing panels, you can do it on the cheap... spend a little more are get twin wall polycarbonate panels and build your fame to the right size.

I have 4 secondhand greenhouses and the most I have paid for any of them was £35, two were free. Two included staging and two included autovents - just a few panes of glass to replace in each case - mostly broken by me.

All I ever did was put the word around that I wanted one and was prepared to dismantle.

My Uncle built my Dad a greenhouse from a few bricks, some wood and standard glazed glass.

Nothing was free but it didn't cost the earth.

It WAS worth it because it was a lean-to that was sized to fit and blend with the end of the garage.
It was also before aluminium was mined in such quantities to be cheap as chips... except some environmentalists think the Earth is paying a huge price for all the aluminium we are producing!

I will be getting an allotment in a few days, and also intend to make a DIY greenhouse.
As it progresses, any tips will gladly be put on here.
Plan at the moment is to use a few large glass panels from a double glazed window, but will need more in the weeks to come.
Some issues with the glass being dangerous on old greenhouses has put me off buying the traditional stuff. Modern safer glass seems the best way to go.
Only one tip so far, if you have access to a circular saw.
Buy treated railway sleepers from ebay, and chop them to size required.
Tanalised timber decking is also a good option, but a little too flexible for larger greenhouses.
You could just cover the frame with clear plastic.

Pop down to a local Double Glazing firm if you have one, they usually have skips full of windows that have been taken out.

Worth checking (but you might already have done so ) if your lottie allows glass; many don't as it is a bit of a nightmare for future plot tenants if it breaks and gets mixed in with the soil

Me too for me the best part of that is being able to stroll out into the garden and pick the veg for the meal so that it is in the pan within a few minutes, beautifully fresh.

As others have said; I would also recommend checking ebay/gumtree/freecycle/freegle, I missed out on some incredible bargains recently due to work/hectic/chaos that is life (8ft x 10ft < £50).

I have a space for ahem, another greenhouse (#3) and am hoping to bag a bargain when less people are looking for one (eg. when it is cold and wet).
