Homemade wormery

Hi,
Was looking on line at wormeries and they seem very expensive .
Was just wondering if anyone out there has made one and how successful you were?
A lot of them seem to be made of plastic. Was wondering if you could use a large dustbin but then what would you do with the liquid at the bottom?
Have got room either down the allotment or at home for one.

I'm not very good at DIY, but I think a water butt would be better than a dustbin...

We once made one out of an old water cistern with a tap at the bottom, didn't use it for long though because we had to dismantle it to get the finished compost out. So if I ever make one again it will be using separate boxes.

You don't need to understand what they are saying to understand the principle. My advice would be to try something like this first:

This video is great Bigmally. Looking at the tap he used do you think it was a home brew kit tap? Would a water butt tap be ok or would you have to put a seal around it?

You could either use a waterbutt tap or a brewers tap. They usually come with washers. If you know anyone with a set of hole saws, it will be a lot easier than faffing around with a file like he did.

If you keep it a home its far easier to keep it in tip top order during periods of bad weather when its not good enough to go to the lottie.

We have a covered area outside our back door so could wedge one in there. Little chance of kids knocking it over and would be easier to get rid of kitchen waste.
Have read on line a lot of people using fishing worm instead of garden ones. Think I know somewhere to get them.

Get some starter worms from someone with a compost heap. You dont need many as they will soon breed.

Those plastic or rubber storage bins make great worm bins. Drill a few holes in the bin so your worms get plenty of air.

Just be sure to cover those holes with small pieces of window screen or something else that will keep the fruit flies out.

And if you have any plumbing experience, why not add a hose spigot near the bottom of the bin to take advantage of worm tea.

NVG. Try making your own wormary with poly. fish boxes drill a hole in your base box fit a drain spicket, using silicon sealant to seal the pipe, next drill holes in the bottom of your next box to allow any moisture to drain, although I have a book that states that there should no "worm tea" from the wormary as you should add cardboard to dry up any exess moisture, just add boxes to the system as you need them Using poly boxes should allow you to keep the wormary going over the cold months, and place something on the lid to save it being blowen away,
ps. there should be no need to drill air holes in the boxes
