friction hinges

Ok well im making a could frame with a old patio door. (Frame is metal ahhhh) The glass is toughend. So as you can imagine its very heavy. I was wondering if any one has successfully attached. Friction hinges/gas struts/ window friction hinges. Im after something that may keep it open aswell. Rather tan just a stick that could fall n then door on head. Wouldnt be 1st time of a similar situation :/. Any advise,tips or suggestions would be greatful thank you x

what about a counter weight if there is room, at the back but would not want be too long as it wouldnt open much
