Repair of water butt

Hi y'all,

I am hoping you are the fount of all knowledge... I know that water butts are not that expensive, but i am super skint and plus I hate to dispose when I can repair or re-use


I have a water butt similar to but not exactly like this:


The problem is, I was hoping to set it up next to my greenhouse to collect twice as much rainwater as currently, however I discovered that on the sticking out bit either side of the tap, just at the bottom has been damaged, it's got holes!!

Is there any way that I can repair this that won't cost as much as buying a new one?

Can you get a red hot knife on it and weld some plastic from the butt over the holes.

You could try some self amalgamating tape, should work if used properly.

Just chatted to OH on this option, doesn't look like it'll work in the location of the holes.

There's a gap in the market here; 'butt repair kit' should be a thing, I'll have to invent something!!

What about two part epoxy either the putty or the glue mixed with a filler (e.g. talc, plaster)?

Found this FloPlast SC250 Solvent Cement 250ml | Sealers & Compounds | Screwfix.com and I reckon taking half your idea of using plastic from the butt might just do it..... I can cut a piece from the top no problem!

No idea, will ask OH his views on this one, long shot as he tend to work with metal but he might even have some epoxy kicking around....

I used something similar to Duct Seal Compound around the holes when I connected all my water butts together. Made them nice and water tight.

#6 We use that stuff all the time to solvent weld waste and condensate pipe work.

Be aware than it only works on certain plastics. For instance it will not touch push fit poly waste pipes

Just the kind of words of wisdom I am looking for! How do I know what plastic my water butt is...? Do I look for symbols on the thing? Which are OK and which would be pointless?

If you get it nice and dry i dont see why silicone sealant wouldnt work, but do it on the inside is always best.

The easiest water to know if the solvent weld will work if you decide to go down that root. If you know a plumber ask them we mostly have a can on the van as its an every day item.

If you wait till tomorrow I will try on my butt, its not forced to be the same but it may give us a clue.
