  • Old Net Curtains

Has anyone ever used old net curtains as an insect screen in place of much more expensive enviromesh? If so how did it go? Was it effective or just a daft idea? Be interesting to hear.

I bought really cheap new ones from Ikea...they have a very fine mesh.
I think it depends on the pattern in the net curtain as to how effective it is.

They do biodegrade eventually- but in reality that's a good thing.

I've used net curtains in the past and they work well until they disintegrate but they're cheep enough from charity shops.

Here's a couple of older thread for you to look at for more info :-

How small do the holes need to be for carrot fly?

I have a cheap enough butterfly net already for cabbages from Wilko, but that carrot fly mesh is far too pricey!

Indeed it is! The very reason I asked.

Thanks BM, I spotted you in Bren's links. Unfortunately the nearest Blue n Yellow shop is 200 miles away in Edinburgh. Fortunately I'm heading that way at the end of the month!

Edit: WOW!!! Checked out delivery cost.... that just doubled the price!!! Guess I'll wait till I'm down there!

I took down some old nets to use to protect plants. I think the holes to big to use s a direct replacement for enviromesh but I am sure I will find some use for it. I was considering using to shade the green house by threading wire through them so I can pull them back when needed.

I used some net curtains on the outside of the GH. Threaded them onto a cane and wedged it up under the Ridge. The curtain covered the sunny side of the roof and had a very twee scalloped edge that looked ever so sweet (or naff). I pegged it to the guttering to keep it in place.
You could also use them to cover fruit bushes to keep the birds off.
