I have a small garden with limited space. I have acquired quite a bit of spent compost from potato growing containers and other large pots that are cluttering up my space. I can't really put it in the raised bed or borders as I have limited space. Can I use it again if I add some blood fish bone/seaweed/chicken manure pellets or even mix with new compost ? Or shall I try and add it as best I can to the soil in my beds ?

I would be happy to reuse it, provided nothing diseased had grown in it. Ideally grow something different in it to last time, and it will need appropriate fertiliser adding. I use a Potato fertiliser in my containers for spuds (even with brand new compost), I reckon that would be fine for 2nd season usage. I wouldn't use something like Blood, Fish and Bone for 1st earliest as I'm not sure it would "release" nutrients fast enough.
Liquid feed would be fine, if in doubt, as that would be "immediately" available to the plants. Easy to adjust from some-Nitrogen to mostly-Potash through the growing cycle too.
I have mixed spent compost from potato containers 50:50 with sharp sand and grown carrots in it successfully.Last edited by Kristen; 06-03-2015, 10:57 AM.K's Garden blog the story of the creation of our garden

I read that you can put peas in after potatoes,so last year I emptied most my potato bag into a trough, added BFB & sowed peas-kelvedon wonder-they got powdery mildew, never had that before & they struggled to grow,so the compost must have had very little nutrients in it? I was emptying out my potato bags yesterday, found loads of slug eggs & a few woodlice,so it's good to empty it all out. Also notice the birds gathering, waiting to forage
Edit because I think I caused the powdery mildew-ignore that about peas ( I'd sowed them direct outside late spring)Last edited by Jungle Jane; 06-03-2015, 01:35 PM.Location : Essex

I poured last year's compost from containers onto my veg patch in the autumn. My garden soil is too much clay so this ought to improve it.
This year I'll be using about 300 litres of compost in containers, so might be too much for my patch to take, which is 3x2.3 meters. IF some of the compost is disease free then I'd reuse it next year adding in some new fertilisers.
