  • Will bamboo slat screening rot quickly if the bottom is in earth?

I don't want to be spending a lot of money fixing up something that isn't mine but I'm tired of seeing the old broken lattice fence from my living room window!

I've been pricing options and the cheapest way to erect something in it's place is to put some screening there, it would cost more for the slats to rebuilt the lattice, the screening is cheaper.

My 'problem' is that the fence crosses two levels, the garden is stepped. So I would need to buy the taller screening to suit the lower level then cut the rest along the higher lever, if that makes sense.

Then I wondered if I could just dig a narrow trench on the higher level to sit the screening in and backfill against it, that way I wouldn't need to cut it. The area has just been dug and it would be so easy to do.

Or am I just asking for a quick rotting screen doing this?

IMO bamboo canes sunk in the ground would rot very quickly. It would seem to me my canes start getting shorter after three seasons and they are only in the compost for 4 to 5 months a year.

      That's what I feared.

      Thanks for the reply.

it would last longer if you stood the roll of screening in a bucket/pot of wood preservative up to where the soil level will be for a few days, this certainly works with bamboo canes
