How do I sew jute?

Sounds a bit basic I know but I've never used this stuff before so I have no clue if you can sew it like you would 'normal' material? It seems to be very rough and 'holey' iyswim and not a tight woven fabric.

I'm trying to build a deck board planter on legs, just big enough to sit a growbag in but I'd prefer it if the growbag wasn't on show. So I thought I could make a cover or bag for it, out of jute/hessian.

Is there a special thread I should use? Can it be done on a sewing machine?

I don't see why you can't use a sewing machine.
Maybe use a polyester thread so it doesn't rot .

Personally, I'd gently pull off a few threads from a raw edge and hand sew it using a darning needle.

Will do. As long as you bear in mind I'm a middle aged female and no hunky experienced joiner or carpenter. (I put the hunky bit in just for effect. )

I'll see if I can find one to drape himself over my planter when it's built, just for the pic. Much like they do with scantily clad girls at car shows.

You can sew looser weave fabrics like this on a sewing machine but it can be a bit tricky - normally the back would be lined with something else like a plain cotton for home furnishings like cushions etc. A zig-zag stitch will hold loose weaves much better than straight stitch as I found when sewing netting up.

With hand sewing, you could try sewing Xs instead of or just inside the straight stitch as extra reinforcement and that should help prevent fraying better.
