How to shift three 1 tonne bags of pea shingle 20m across grass?

Howdy bright sparks!

I need to order three 1 tonne bags of pea shingle and no doubt the driver will only be able to drop it over the hedge or in the gateway to the field. Has anyone got any bright ideas on how to then shift it the 20m or so i need to get it to the position i want to store it?

I'm thinking that i might be able to drag it with a car?
Or get it dropped onto a sheet of ply and then drag the sheet with a car?

Any better ideas or refinements to the ideas above?

The very best solution would also be the most expensive............................helicopters don't come cheap.

Seriously I don't think you would drag it with an average car with the bag just sat on the ground, the friction would be to hard to break.

The next idea would be to cost the hire of a small self drive bobcat you could then rope the bag to the bucket and easily lift and move them.

Can you get hold of a couple of sheets of thick tin plate, turn the leading edge up to form a shape like a sled runner, you might then be able to pull them with a car.

Finally spare bag, large bucket, spade and hand ball the stuff.

We moved railway sleepers using waterbottles filled with...yup...water , placed underneath and rolled them?
Maybe you could put a few round fencing poles underneath parallel planks/sheet metal and roll it along....easier of course if you can pull it slowly with a car.
Obviously you'd need to move the last pole to the front as it moves along.

The old how the built the pyramids method of moving isn't going to work with a sack of pea shingle it relies on the object being moved being capable of supporting itself between supports.

The lady did say on 'parallel planks or sheet metal'.

Don't think it would work though just to much weight the rollers would sink into the grass/ground. It would certainly work on hard standing, I along with a couple of mates have shifted a 3 tonne safe using exactly that method.

Thanks all... We had considered the fence post, Egyptian rolling method too and hadn't considered the sinking into the grass point... Although, we could put ply down, put fence posts on, put ply on top, get the bag lowered onto the ply and then roll...! Good job i've got a load of free ply from work.

Assuming you don't want to wheelbarrow the lot (we had to do ours using gorilla tubs!) - rolling is your best (or at least cheapest) bet - not sure how... skateboards?!

Yeah - i just don't want to block the gateway up as need to get in and out to park and for general access.... long story. And i'm not moving 3 tonnes of shingle 20m by barrow to then move it pretty much back to the same spot again.

What have the Egyptians ever done for us?

If you're thinking of moving them 20m with the car,I think the delivery driver would be able to do it if you tell him where? It's normal to drive on grass in some places,they must've encountered it before,like dropping off at farms & if they get lost & the sat nav says it's left but there's no road just a field.

Fingers crossed that's the other option but there might be a trench dug across the entrance before they turn up to deliver and the entrance to the field as a bit tight for the lorry that it's likely to drop it off so i'm thinking of other options!

Stan re Bobcat they come in many sizes and with different purposes if you discuss it with the local hire people they will advise.

Your suggestion of plyboard might well work if you can get some thick enough to prevent bending and you lay the boards so they slightly overlap with the first board on top of the second, that way you won't have a step to climb from one board to the next.

Another thought canvass straps around the car axle would give a good fixing for a Tirfor winch enabling you to do everything slowly so you don't loose control and moving the car would give you some lateral movement. They take no effort to use I have even had SWMBO help me move large objects with a Tirfor.
