  • Need ideas for my garden

I would like some ideas as to what to do with the bit of garden by the fence. It is always water logged and I am not a flower gardener (as you can see by the grass/weeds) The slabs are under my dining room. Do you think it would look OK if I had it slabbed all down the fence?

My vegetable garden is the other side

Where is the water source? Is it running from a gutter or off a patio area? If so set a drain to divert it. If it's running off the lawn, then making the lawn able to absorb more rain would be desirable.
Get one of those hollow tine tools and take out cores from the lawn, fill the cores with a mixture of sand and compost then dress the whole lawn with a layer of brushed sand/compost mix. Apply more compost at the end of the season and repeat in the spring etc. The worms will get working and soon your lawn won't need feed and weed and will absorb much more rainwater.
Once you've got the water sorted you can use more veg growing space.

The water is just from rain. It sits for ages and when it drains the soil looks green and slimy.

The lawn drains lovely, it absorbs very well.

I don't really need anymore veg growing space. I am also trying to think of the future when I won't be able to do as much

I think Kevin's on the right lines... we had a very waterlogged garden and had to dig in drainage pits to get rid of it. You could do that in that area and soil back on top (maybe even gravel that area?)

Unfortunately I think if you just slab the whole area you're going to have more of a problem - at the least the water will sit on the slabs for longer, but potentially you'll just shift the waterlogged part to somewhere else!

You could fit a drainage channel in the middle of the slabs but I don't know how much it would help? The water must run off into a drain?

That does seem to be quite a lot of water. Are you at the bottom of the hill? What is at the end of your garden? What's on either side? Are your gutters and downpipes clear?

It would be hard work but i think drainage is the answer if the source of the water is solely from the rain. Are you sure it's not draining from somewhere else - your roof, your neighbours, etc?
