Installing wooden staked lawn edging

Good afternoon all

I'm having a tough time getting some edging I bought from Home base yesterday as our soil is too dry.

I've already edged the lawn to accommodate for it and weeded the bed ready for more\better soil and increased depth for plants

Ant tips on making this process any easier? Its been made easier by watering the soil but its still taking an age.

A iron bar driven into the ground and then rotated with a ever widening circular motion will give you a starter hole to drive your stakes into.

Even putting a spade in but not digging will help a lot.

It is a bit dry & unworkable,my clay is rock solid at the moment,I planted out two geraniums the other day in a bed that's already in action & I still couldn't dig very deep at all,can you get a spade then a fork in there,maybe you've hit a stone or plant roots have a feel around with a fork at different angles to see if something's in your way?

I've given up for the day and managed to mallet down 5 out of 12.

They're secure but not down as deep as I would of hoped. I'm sure I can work around that.

Hoping for some considerable rain!

Should of done for the flat type but my main aim was improve soil depth above all else.

I am presuming these are the ones you have purchased! If so, they really need to be knocked in solidly, so loosening the ground before hand will not be of any advantage to be honest, after all you actually putting them in as a retainer!

So perseverance I'm afraid!

Similar but mine have three larger and flatter pegs with the design running horizontally rather than vertically. From Home base too but a little more expensive.

Yeah, must admit they do look a little more cumbersome!

But then again you are wanting them to do a specific job, so time well spent in preparation will pay dividends to the end result!
