One of the main reasons I'd go deeper 4' to soffit-ish is to orotect the pipe from accidental damage. I assume you won't be trafficking over it with anything too heavy though so that will help.

Not over the pipe, no - I'm planning on digging the pipe channel along one side of the path rather than down the centre to try and minimise potential for weight damage.http://mudandgluts.com - growing fruit and veg in suburbia
