  • Perspex/acrylic/old signage

Not sure if this is the right place to post but I was wondering where I could get old perspex/acrylic sheeting or old signage from shop fronts.

I inherited some scabby old boarding along the back of the plot that has been seriously water damaged but it acting partly as a wind break (our site is unbelievably windy) and partly to stop stuff coming through the fence. I guess it works but it's unsightly.

I noticed some other people on the site (though haven't seen them to speak to them) seem to have old bits of perspex signage. Is this something any of you have acquired before and how have you gone about it?

Hard plastic seems to make the most sense but I can't really afford the £20-£30 per metre that it costs at DIY shops.

Unfortunately it is the sort of thing that when you are looking for it, it will be hard to find and cost a fortune. When you are not looking for it it will just be there and quite likely free. Speak to the plot holders they may have more kicking about, speak to shops fitters see what they do with the old stuff, scrap/ salvage yards (unlikely but worth a try), keep an eye out for skips, local auctions often have a cheap jack room and a no telling what turns up area outside . Then you have gumtree, flea bay, freecycle etc.

Have a mosey round some double glazing companies, they usually have skips full of removed windows. Don't know if that will help.

How about shower screens/cubicles? They're often offered on the Freecycle type sites.

^^^Sorry VC but..... shower screen glass will shatter into lots of teeny tiny pieces under stress/ heat extremes probably not a good option in Scotland

It is OK you can get your pointy stick out if ya want

I thought you could get plastic/acrylic/perspex/whatever ones too?

^^^Dunno, maybe very old ones or some obscure companies might do. For the last 15ish years all the ones I have come across are safety glass (3mm - 10mm thickness from all sorts of companies/ manufacturers).

Have you thought about Mushroom Trays, cable tie them together and stake them well, I've taken the bottoms off for wind protection & anti fox around my walking onions, but I will be using them whole around my greenhouse on the back and side to protect the Perspex from stones when the guy next door and the council use their strimmers

Depending on the type of fencing you can buy Correx sheets in white, black or transparent quite cheaply less than £3 for a 1.2m x 2.4m sheet http://www.indigo.co/Item/pallet-of-...FQg6GwodVWkHBw or what about scaffolding debris netting?
