  • Levelling a concrete greenhouse base.

    Evening.

    I need to lay a level 10' x 8' greenhouse base.

I mostly understand concreting. I know you build a frame, chuck the concrete in, then you and your mate tamp it down with your scaffold board cut to size, and all the fines come to the surface so you can smooth it over with a float if you feel posh.

I want to know what you do if it needs to go in a corner by the fence and your mate can't get to the other side without falling in.

    How do you level it?

    Please help.

Wouldn't you start in that corner and work diagonally backwards?

What, you mean not fill it all at once? I've never done that.

We had a metal strip the same height as the surrounds which was set in the middle to make sure the depth was even across the middle .
I think it was called an expansion strip or something.
Not sure if you can get them in the uk though?

You're just looking forward to sloshing about in a tub of concrete aren't you?

It's way easier to make the mix a bit thicker and level it barrow load by barrowload

I'm at a loss as to why you want to lay concrete. Would it not be easier to lay a bed of sand then put paving slabs down?

I'd have worked on the principle that water finds its own level so the runnier the better.

Oh good grief no I can't lay a level slab for love nor money please don't make me do it.

Plus concrete is less blowawayable than slabs to my mind.

                      Concreting is fun!
                      Not environmentally friendly though ...

I still think you are making hard work for yourself..............build a wall 3 or 4 courses high then you can use the soil for beds.
