  • DIY Slug Bell

    Well Hello,

I was messing around in the garden last night and came up with a budget alternative to a slug bell. In doing so, It occured to me I hadn't been here for some time so today seemed like a good day to post.

Anyway, for those of you that don't know what a slug bell is please see below.

It keeps your slug pellets dry essentially prolonging their life.

So I came up with the budget version below, using a terracotta pot, an old bamboo cane and yoghurt pot from our local indian restaurant ( other local Indian restaurants are available!!), and three oldish pegs, don't tell the missus she might not think they are old, and that would be the scissor gate all over again....... shh.

A little bit of bluetac around the top to stop the water getting in, and voila a protective cover for your slug pellets, out of non slug reaches too.

This looks like a good idea so I'm going to give it a try. The only worry that I have though is that they look very light and will easily be blown about in the wind so I'm going to put a few stones in the bottom of them. I'll post some photos when I do them.

If you watch the video I melt a hole in and use a galvanised tent peg to keep them in place, but it will be interesting to see your solution.

I'll be honest and say that I clicked through the video so I missed that bit. I'd figure that I could use tent pegs but I thought it might be a bit fiddly to do. That's why I chose stones.

I used wire to fasten the tops on.

The washing up liquid bottle is too small for stones so that will live in the greenhouse.

Now here's a thing: I've never used slug pellets. The snails have out-competed them, so I have very few slugs and millions of snails (I don't think that's an exaggeration). But here's a question I've never considered: do slug pellets work on snails? If so, I might give this bell a go.

Yes I've seen dead snails around pellets.

The only downside here is that I think this is a tiger slug which only eats dead material which means it's actually a gardeners friend, but at least it proves it works.
